One of the first questions people often ask when researching divorce mediation is:
How much will this cost me?
It is a fair question. Separation already carries emotional and financial strain, and clarity around the cost to both parties is important.

By Ruth Schocken Katz, family and divorce mediator based at Camden Therapy in NW London.
How Much Does Divorce Mediation Cost?
Divorce mediation is typically charged per person, per hour. At RSK Mediation, I want to offer complete transparency, so you can see a full breakdown of my mediation fees here.
Most mediators structure fees around:
Joint mediation sessions
Preparation of outcome documents
A typical structure looks like:
MIAM: around £95-£150 per person
Joint sessions: around £150-£200 per person per hour
Drafting documents: fixed fee per person
Most couples require between two and five joint mediation sessions.
That means total mediation costs are often in the region of £600 to £1,500 per person, depending on complexity.
How Does That Compare To Court?
A fully contested divorce involving financial remedy proceedings in London can cost tens of thousands of pounds per person.
It may also take over a year to conclude.
Mediation is not “cheap” in absolute terms. But compared to litigation, it is significantly more cost-effective.
More importantly, it can prevent financial damage caused by prolonged conflict.
What Affects The Cost?
Several factors influence overall cost:
Complexity of financial arrangements
Number of properties or pensions
Level of conflict and willingness to resolve it
Whether children are involved
Whether full agreement is reached
The more focused and transparent both parties are, the fewer sessions are required.
The Family Mediation Voucher Scheme
If mediation relates to arrangements for children, you may be eligible for the Family Mediation Voucher Scheme.
This provides up to £500 towards mediation costs per family.
The scheme remains available in 2026, subject to eligibility and funding availability.
This can significantly reduce the overall cost.
Is Mediation Worth It?
Cost is not only about pounds spent. It is also about:
Time saved
Stress reduced
Damage avoided
Relationships preserved
For many families, mediation pays for itself in what it prevents.
